A last note: if these last words did not sound very familiar to you and you are afraid that languages can be an obstacle that prevents you from taking part in this wonderful experience, then forget about it! To be part of Alpbach you just need to be able to understand what I’m saying in these very last few sentences: a little bit of English, a lot of open-mindedness, and here we go: you are ready to experience the spirit of Alpbach

Alpbacher Wiesenpicknick 2011

“Wiesenpicknick” – what is that?

“Wiesenpicknick” literally translates as “picnic in the meadow”. Thinking of Europe in combination with the word ‘picnic’ inevitably recalls the legendary Pan-European picnic which took place on 19 August 1989 at the Austrian-Hungarian border. It was on this occasion that the first 661 GDR citizens were able to cross the dreaded border which divided East and West. This event marked the triumphant beginning of the end of the Iron Curtain and the re-unification of Europe. However, the term „Wiesengespräch“ (“talk in the meadow”) in the context of Alpbach carries other connotations. It reminds us of the traditional lectures of great philosophers, held in the shade of old trees in midst of the marvellous Alpbach surroundings. Our Alpbach ‘ancestors’ quite often refer to these famous talks in open nature. They speak of them with passion and a slight touch of melancholy. These “Wiesengespräche” have become an inextricable part of the founding narrative of the ‘Alpbach Saga’. People sat and talked in small groups in a laid-back atmosphere under the open sky. The “Alpbacher Wiesenpicknick” now aims at revitalising this unforgotten part of the Alpbach spirit. At the same time, it is intended to bridge the generation gap in Alpbach and promote the exchange between the young and the ‘almost young’.

The “Wiesenpicknick” – how do we organise it?

A “Wiesenpicknick” is characterised by its familiarity (no stiff event in a large hall), its focus on lively interaction (no frontal or one-way approach) and its role as a bridge between the generations (the initial statements are presented by people in an early or middle stage of their career). Alpbach’s nature provides the picturesque backdrop. In the beginning is the word: a short presentation, followed by a lively discussion. At the end of the picnic stand a pleasantly filled stomach and a pampered soul. Food, nature and social interaction as a tonic for body and mind.

Is there any experience available?

The first “Wiesenpicknick” took place on 24 August 2008 in the meadow above the EFA conference centre. Sitting on soft blankets under a warm sun and helping themselves to South Tyrolean speck and wine, the 40 participants eagerly discussed “The role of international organisations in protecting European minorities”. Initial statements were presented by Alpbach’s first ‘picnickers’ who described the event as refreshing and enriching. Overleaf you will find some pictures of this pilot event.

Which topics could the 2011 Wiesenpicknicks discuss?

The European Forum Alpbach is known for its interdisciplinary approach and its willingness to tackle upcoming themes in an early stage. In the picnics the members of the EFA-AN present interesting and relevant topics important in a young Europe. In fact, it is really open minded!

Who can be the speaker in the picnic?

The Alpbacher Wiesenpicknick is a highly flexible carrier concept. A wide range of subjects and speakers appear suitable. The topic shall be presented by high potential young spirits in an early or middle stage of their career either from science, politics, culture or business community.

Which language should be used in the picnic?

In the summer Alpbach becomes a melting pot of many European cultures and we speak many different languages. So you are free to choose the language of your event, but please make sure that you can attract enough people for an interesting discussion.

What efforts does the hosting EFA-AM have to consider?

The inviting Club or IG gives the candidates a royal treatment (introduction to values and history of EFA, any organisational matter from visa, journey to accommodation, special care and attention in Alpbach and promotion of the event). On the other hand the EFA-AN and SC provide a pleasant location, fix a suitable date, grant free attendance for the speakers to all events of EFA11 for two days and, if possible, invite special guests like last years Romano Prodi or Johannes Hahn to your picnic.

Financial support

The EFA success-story is based on voluntary work. The chance to present one’s own work on an international stage like Alpbach shall outweigh any recompense, even for the journey. No financial is available for operating IGs/Clubs or for speakers.

How can you submit proposals?

To apply, please email a motivation letter from your Club or IG, a convincing proposal of topic of the picnic (3000 signs) and a short presentation of the speaker(s) to This e-mail address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it .

Closing date: 30 june 2011

Whenever the nature of Alpbach builds the
overwhelming setting, it becomes possible: to
picnic means to merge mind and nature, to
pamper body and soul, to let eyes and ears
perceive life at its best, or simply to enjoy
intellectual exchange in a new format.
